Most drivers know they can get pulled over for speeding or going through a red light, but some smaller issues can also lead to a traffic stop or ticket.

Here are a few things to keep an eye on:

1. Your License Plate Is Hard to Read

Take a look at your license plate every once in a while. Can you clearly read all of it?

Dirt, snow, damage, or covers can cause issues, especially under New York’s stricter rules.

Keeping your plate clean and legible helps avoid trouble, even if the obstruction was unintentional.

2. Your License Plate Light Is Out

Headlights and brake lights aren’t the only lights to check on your car.

Your car also has a small light that helps make your rear license plate visible at night, and it is one of the lights checked during a New York State vehicle inspection.

Take a look at it the next time you are outside at night.

3. One of Your Other Lights Is Not Working

You may not know when a brake light or tail light stops working.

Every so often, check your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights.

4. Your Windows Are Too Dark

Window tint can help block bright sunlight and give you more privacy, but certain states like New York have rules about how dark your windows can be.

Just because the tint was already on the car when you bought it does not mean it meets the rules.

5. Your Windshield Has a Large Crack

If a tiny chip in your windshield turns into a large crack, it could become a problem.

A crack that is 11 inches or longer can fail inspection if any part of it is in the area cleaned by your windshield wipers.

If you notice a crack getting bigger, do not ignore it.

6. Your Wipers Do Not Work Well

Windshield wipers are easy to forget about until you need them.

If your wipers are broken, skipping across the glass, or leaving large streaks that make it hard to see, it may be time to replace them.

7. A Passenger Is Not Wearing a Seat Belt

You remembered your seat belt. What about everyone else in the car?

An adult passenger may receive a ticket for not wearing one. There are also situations where the driver may receive a ticket if a passenger under age 16 is not properly buckled.

8. Something Is Wrong With Your Mirrors

Your mirrors are also checked during a vehicle inspection.

They need to be in the right place and in good enough condition for you to use. A broken, missing, or badly damaged mirror may cause a problem.

9. You Stop Where You Shouldn’t

Sometimes you only plan to stop for a few seconds. Maybe you are dropping someone off, picking someone up, or waiting outside a store.

However, a brief stop can still violate local rules. Watch for signs and restrictions near crosswalks, bus stops, bike lanes, fire hydrants, and other areas where stopping or parking is prohibited.
