While nearly 3,000 lives were lost on September 11, 2001, the toll continues to rise. Toxic debris and dust clouds left a lasting legacy of illness for the thousands of first responders, workers, and residents who were in the area in the months that followed.
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, (VCF), provides compensation for victims of 9/11-related illnesses from being in the exposure zone during or after the attacks; including certain types of cancer, respiratory illness, lung disease, and families of those who have since passed.
It is important to know that you do not need to have a life-threatening or “catastrophic” disease to be eligible; many common chronic conditions like something as simple as persistent GERD (acid reflux) can qualify you for significant compensation.
Do You Qualify?
You may be entitled to benefits if you were present in the “Exposure Zone” between September 11, 2001, and July 31, 2002.
The Exposure Zone Includes:
- Lower Manhattan: Anywhere south of Houston Street.
- Staten Island: Areas near the Fresh Kills Landfill.
- Debris Routes: Any path used for 9/11 debris removal.
Who is eligible?
- First responders and volunteers.
- Construction, clean-up, and debris removal workers.
- Residents, office workers, and students who lived or studied in the zone.
Covered Conditions
The VCF covers a wide range of health issues resulting from toxic exposure, including:
- Digestive Issues: GERD (acid reflux), hiatal hernia, and related disorders.
- Respiratory Illnesses: Asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, or chronic cough.
- Cancers: Over 70 different types of cancer are recognized by the fund.
- Family Claims: Benefits for those who have lost a loved one to these illnesses.
