E-ZPass keeps traffic flowing and makes paying easy and convenient. But it just takes one account error and you can end up with hundreds of dollars in fines.
Understand how the E-ZPass system works to best protect your wallet. Here are the most common reasons members receive penalties and how to prevent them.
Incorrect E-ZPass Mounting
If your E-ZPass, also known as the “transponder” is not properly mounted to your windshield, the overhead sensors may not be able to read it.
- You will be charged at the significantly higher “Pay-by-Mail” rate or flagged for toll evasion.
- Always use the provided mounting strips to attach the tag behind your rearview mirror. Do not leave it on the dashboard or in a console.

Insufficient Account Funds
If you do not have an “automatic payment method” linked to your account, your balance can quickly drop to zero. Once the balance is empty, your E-ZPass is deactivated.
- Every toll you pass with an inactive tag is treated as a violation, often carrying a $50 administrative fee per occurrence.
- Set up “Auto-Pay” or “Auto-Replenish” to ensure your account always has a positive balance.
Outdated Vehicle Information
The E-ZPass system links your transponder to your specific license plate number. If you get a new car or change your plates without updating your account, the system cannot verify your identity.
- If your tag fails to read, the system will photograph your plate. If that plate isn’t in their records, you will receive a violation summons in the mail.
- Log in to your E-ZPass account immediately whenever you buy a new vehicle or receive new license plates.
Unpaid Toll Notices and Late Fees
Ignoring a toll bill or violation notice is the most expensive mistake a driver can make.
- Fees compound quickly. A small unpaid toll can lead to late fees, collection agency actions, and even the suspension of your vehicle registration.
- Open all mail from tolling authorities immediately. If you believe a charge is an error, you must file a formal dispute within the timeframe listed on the notice.
