It can be incredibly unsettling to be involved in a hit-and-run, when another driver collides with your car and then flees. Understanding the necessary steps will protect both your well-being and your rights.

What to do:

  • Don’t Chase: Do NOT pursue the other driver.  Your safety is important.  Chasing can be dangerous and take you away from the scene, potentially losing crucial evidence.
  • Call 911: If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.
  • Gather Information: Collect as much detail as possible about the other vehicle:
    • License plate number (even a partial plate is helpful)
    • Make, model, and color
    • Any visible damage
    • Photos of your vehicle’s damage
    • Location, date, and time of the accident
    • How the accident occurred
  • Find Witnesses: Ask anyone who saw the accident (including passengers) for their information. Get their contact details if they’re willing to give a statement.
  • Check for Video: See if nearby businesses (stores, restaurants) have security cameras that might have captured the incident.
  • Contact Your Insurance: Your insurance company is a key resource for handling vehicle damage claims.  They can explain your coverage and help with the repair process.
