Have you heard of the REAL ID deadline? If you’re a New Yorker who utilizes or plans to utilize domestic air travel, you’ll want to read this article.
Starting May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act will be fully enforced. This means that for domestic flights within the United States, a valid passport or a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or non-driver ID will be mandatory for boarding.
What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a driver’s license or non-driver ID issued by a state that meets the heightened security standards established by the federal government under the REAL ID Act. These standards aim to improve the reliability and security of identification documents used for domestic travel.
Do I Need a REAL ID?
If you plan to fly domestically after May 7, 2025, you’ll either need a REAL ID, a passport, or another form of federally-approved identification such as a U.S. military ID or certain border crossing cards.
Benefits of a REAL ID
While obtaining a REAL ID isn’t mandatory for everyone, it offers several advantages:
- Convenience: Having a REAL ID eliminates the need to carry your passport for domestic flights.
- Flexibility: A REAL ID can also be used to enter certain federal facilities like military bases and federal courthouses (although some facilities may still require additional identification).
- Security: REAL IDs incorporate enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting and identity theft.
